89 Cheyenne Resto/Makeover

I copied this thread from FSC, so the time-line isn't accurate.[/B]

The truck was originally from Hickory, N.C. The original owner moved to Va. just before i bought the truck. The previous owner had installed a fifth-wheel hitch in the bed to pull his 4-banger race car to the local track leaving 8 bolt holes in the bed (which are gone later).

The tired 305 and 400 tranny got rebuilt just over 8k miles before i got the truck. The previous owner was wanting an NBS and decided to sell me the 89.

I used the truck as a work truck the first year i had it. After tinting the windows and installing a Kenwood deck, the Western Chassis 4/6 drop kit was the first real modification done to the truck. DT Nitro Slammers were installed at each corner.

this pic was taken at the shop that put on the 4/6. The tires were 235/75/15 at the time.

My health went downhill some last winter slowing my plans down due to a $17,000 hospital bill. During this time i changed jobs and the truck was no longer a work truck and my car became the new Daily Driver.

Next on the list were a GoodMark Cowl Hood, Street Scene mirriors, 90+ composite lights, clear markers, and clear park lights. I rattle canned the grille to freshen it up even though i had plans for a new grille. I bought a set of Pacer DragStar wheels dirt cheap and threw them on temporarily running 235/60/15 in front and 255/60/15 out back.

Being a tall guy at 6ft 4in, the non-tilt column was a pain. So installing the tilt unit from a 94 was my next move.

Up next was redoing the Air Conditioning System. It's been retro-fitted for the new freon and works very well.

I began to get tired of the stiff DT shocks, and read on here that Impala rear shocks would fit so i gave them a try... the rear shocks are for a 67 impala and ride real smooth compared to the DT shocks.

A couple months ago i started to realize that my budget for getting the truck painted was almost in sight. I pulled the bed and did some cleaning and then got some POR-15 out and got it everywhere (mostly on me...)

http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/w...R/100_1014.jpg

while the bed was off, i flipped it and cleaned it real good, sanded it some and put some rattle can bed liner on the bottom side.

http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/w...R/100_1026.jpg

dagen_1 10-09-2012 09:19 AM

My painter told me he'd knock off $500 if i worked on the inside of the bed. I sanded and sanded blending some scratches on the sides, but stripped the floor and tailgate to the bare metal... and hit it with some self-etching primer.

before (with flip handle opening)

after:
http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/100_1112.jpg

if you look carefully, you'll see the row of holes that held one side of the fifth-wheel hitch. (they get filled later)

dagen_1 10-09-2012 09:19 AM

I had bought some mid-length headers a while back and wanted to get those on before any paint gets sprayed. The headers were from eBay... the same ones BanannaBrain bought... the gaskets are crap... i bought a set at napa and no leaks so far.

under the hood will get some attention later on...like spring of 2013.

dagen_1 10-09-2012 09:20 AM

i took the wiper cowl, mirrors, door handles, grille, and bumper off before taking it to the painter... to save on some labor.

here are some pics from Tuesday to today...

the lack of rectifier diodes in my 1157-style led parklights causes the blink pattern to back-load the circuit. The first video shows that the park lights DO NOT completely blink "off" while blinking the turn signal. The second video is hazards..notice the delayed blinking...

disclaimer: the back-loading of the circuit is NOT from danny's LEDs. The problem is from the eBay LEDs in the park lights. I'll grab a video after this weekend with the stock bulbs to show the true blinking pattern.

thanks danny! i love 'em.

First green looks best imo

Devs93 10-18-2012 10:16 AM

I like that tan! I would see what green matches the best i think it would be the first one

dagen_1 10-18-2012 10:18 AM

i'm guessing the first one (like you guys said) will be the closest match. i don't plan on alot of green for the interior.. just doing some research and trying to finalize a plan. The carpet from LMC is a tad darker tan..which is fine since i don't want the interior TOO matched or monochromatic looking.

Devs93 10-18-2012 10:49 AM

Something i learned from sewlow on gmt is dark colored carpets in lighter interiors looks :boobs:

i agree... Al and I have had several conversations about picking color(s), matching textures, etc. i think the carpet a few shades darker will make the rest of the colors pop.

I've been sitting here sketching a design for the center console... nothing radical, but far from a rectangular box. i'm thinking tan vinyl on sides (to match seats) with a fiberglass color matched top (sour green). double din dvd in the console, gauges (later on) 6.5" speakers on the sides towards the front, and a hidden rear-facing sub. i'd like the sub exposed, but remember i have two dogs that travel with me and i don't want claws tearing through a cone.

Red91 10-18-2012 02:20 PM

That center console sounds sick! I bet the light will play a few tricks on that vinyl. I net the first the color will be close but we will see.

rj2 10-18-2012 07:22 PM

I think the seats should be a 2 tone tan. The light that you have and then the inserts in center of seat the darker color that youll put on the carpet. Then have them stitch it up with the sour green. The stitching. The consol. Maybe a few small trim pieces on dash and maybe a green insert in the door?

thanks for the feedback. i appreciate it. still not 100% locked on my design yet. but i've decided that the seats won't have sour green inserts. i want to avoid "random green areas" and try to pull off subtle green accents. I'll have to do some drawing (since i can't use CAD) and post a pic or two of my ideas. I definitely want double-stitched french seams on the upholstery work.

dagen_1 10-22-2012 09:32 AM

i hate not having a traditional garage. I do have a carport though. it's that time of year to put up the chrome/aluminum since i don't like cleaning/polishing in cold temperatures. time to rock the steelies.

but she floats like a Caddy on 70 series tires LOL

Red91 10-22-2012 11:19 AM

Gangster! I love the 70/60 series combo on mine! Aside from the occasional bump stop meeting she floats!

my 5/7 doesn't hit the bump stops (or hasn't yet). the tires in this pic are 235/70 & 255/70

Red91 10-22-2012 12:45 PM

I hit mine all the time! Lol Apparently I am lower than 7 out back (NOT complaining) I have 225/70 front and 255/60s rear. I bet with your sidewall that thing is smooth!

i had bought these tires a couple years ago when she was my "work truck". Since the TH400 trans. doesn't have over-drive, i stayed with larger tires.

but a 700r4 is on my to-do-list.

Bearcat91 10-22-2012 06:11 PM

Haha ill be in winter mode soon! Expected snow next week wtf!

Red91 10-22-2012 07:29 PM

Yea I love my overdrive. I had an obs with the 400 in hs, it was a pig! My winter mode consists of a garage!

beaver50 10-27-2012 03:50 PM

no body drops for this truck.. or insane engine. i just want a cruiser not a racer.
